For golfers, the mind-body connection is one of the most important factors to compete at a high level. The movement of a golf swing requires great flexibility and full extension of most of the major muscle groups. With that in mind, the Phoenix Salon & Spa now offers a massage catered to golfers. Massage tones muscles and increases overall flexibility by increasing blood flow to the muscles, ligaments and tendons. In turn, this allows the joints to experience a smooth, full range of movement. Another significant benefit of this massage is the decline of injuries caused by the repetitive motions of a golf swing by allowing a more natural movement of the ten areas most prone to golf-related injury—the lower back, wrist, elbow, shoulder, knee, neck, hip, ribs, ankle and foot. The primary goal of this specialized massage is to get you on the table before an injury occurs, thus allowing you to stay injury free and improve your overall enjoyment of the game. The massage technique differs from traditional massage in many ways. During the 90 to 120 minute session, not only is bodywork performed in the normal face-up and face- down fashion, but also along both sides of the body. This allows the therapist to work deeper on the major muscle groups to achieve full mobility of all joints. “When it comes to fundraising, nobody does it better or with more gusto than City of Hope’s Harry Giordano, senior director of development, Northeast region. For the past 12 years, he’s asked salons in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia to become involved in HopeCuts, a program in which stylists donate their talent for one day each November to raise money for City of Hope, “cutting out” cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other life threatening diseases. Salons that raise a minimum of $200 are eligible to compete in the largest fantasy hair contest of its kind anywhere, affectionately called the Hairball.

This year I was in the audience at the Hyatt Regency in Philadelphia as Wildcats: Back to the Jungle got underway. Salon teams must design their costumes to reflect this feline-inspired theme, which is different each year and has included Peking Pussycats, Space Kitties, Scaredy Cats and Carnival Kitties. Philly’s own Phoenix Salon & Spa sent a bevy of jungle animals, including a giraffe, down the runway and won Best of Show for their efforts….” Click here to read complete article.

Portrait artist Barbara Zanelli is teaming up with PAWS, The Residences at the Phoenix, and the Phoenix Salon & Spa to celebrate the special bond between dogs and humans.

Zanelli, a Philadelphia-based painter, has a unique talent for capturing the special relationship we have with our dogs. Through live modeling and/or photographs, she will create a unique and lasting work of art featuring you and your pet. She can paint from a existing photographs, or she will conduct an hour-long photo session in your home or in her studio.

For every $700 commission of a 9x12 oil painting, $100 will go directly to the PAWS adoption center, a place where unwanted animals find forever homes and families.

This cause is so important me, and especially to the animals of Philadelphia who need a new home. And, of course, it is the best event in Philadelphia!

The 4th Annual Dinner with STYLE will take place on Tuesday, November 13 at Sherman Mills in East Falls, and is bigger and better than before! This year will feature over 35 of Philadelphia’s best restaurants including: Morimoto, Susanna Foo, XIX, Roy’s, and Waterworks cooking tableside. Hot Chefs Matthew Levin (Lacroix), Jayson Grossberg (Alphabet Soup), and James Locascio (Barclay Prime) will be creating culinary masterpieces for a great cause—the new PAWS Adoption Centers (the first opens in Old City next month)!

Phoenix Salon & Spa gave Halloween makeovers to a group of costume-clad kids from Project H.O.M.E., and held a “Steve-Clark-Carved Pumpkin Auction” to benefit charity.

Today, we invited a few kids from Project H.O.M.E.’s Rowan Homes to the salon for a little pre trick or treating prep. Carlos, Stacy and Tiffany donned the girls in shimmer and sparkles, while the boys opted for a more ghoulish guise. Meanwhile, Steve Clark, the Worlds Fastest Pumpkin Carver, entertained everyone with his swift pumpkin carving. He carved a few perfect little pumpkins—one for each of the kids. Then, he carved a couple large pumpkins with more intricate designs for auction.

Celebrating inspirational women and mother’s from all walks of life with an unforgettable evening, featuring a fashion show, refreshments, silent auction, honored speakers, local celebrity models, and special guest emcee Sharon Pinkenson, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Film Office.

The Phoenix Salon and Spa and Project H.O.M.E. today announced that they will again partner to hold the second annual Women Empowering Women Event: A Night of Fashion and Compassion to benefit Project H.O.M.E. The event consists of a fashion show featuring the Spring 2007 collections of Elizabeth Maar Boutique and Lane Bryant, silent auction prizes and gift bags, vendor tables, honored speakers, and refreshments. One hundred percent of the revenues generated by the silent auction will benefit Project H.O.M.E.

Women Empowering Women strives to bring compelling, intelligent and diverse women together from all walks of life for an evening of inspiration, empowerment and entertainment. The event seeks to recognize the strength and unity that exists between all women, and help further Project’s H.O.M.E.’s critical mission of breaking the cycle of homelessness.

"This year’s event will build on last year’s success of over 300 attendees, the linkage of inspiring Philadelphia women and their stories, and an increased awareness of Project H.O.M.E., and how we can all personally help in the fight against homelessness" said Amanda S. Aronoff, Esq. Director of Development and Public Relations for Project H.O.M.E. "These formerly homeless women we are honoring truly show us that all women, no matter how seemingly different our lives may appear, are bonded by our struggles, triumphs, and life journeys. The second annual Women Empowering Women event will take place on Monday, May 7, 2007, from 6:00-9:00 PM, and will be held in the atrium of the luxury Phoenix Condominiums at 1600 Arch Street. The event will be held the week of Mother’s Day and will honor inspirational mothers, as well as women who have been inspired and motivated by the positive influence of their mothers.

Afternoon Discussion Forum

Women Empowering Women partners three formerly homeless women from Project H.O.M.E. who have turned their lives around and re-entered the work force with Dana-Spain Smith, CEO of DLG Media, the publisher of Philadelphia Style Magazine, Irene Hannan, a Senior Vice President of Citizen’s Bank, and Carol Lawrence, a Senior Vice President of PNC Bank. These six women will spend the early part of May 7th in a discussion forum, talking and sharing stories of their life experiences. They will then be treated to complimentary salon and spa services at the luxurious Phoenix Salon and Spa.
Later in the evening, the six women and their counterparts from last year’s event will serve as models in the Women Empowering Women fashion show, walking down the runway in pairs, and displaying the unity that exists between them. The fashion show also features celebrity guest models, many of whom are returning from last year’s event, as well as other inspirational Philadelphia women. Executive Director of the Philadelphia Film Office, Sharon Pinkenson, will serve as the guest emcee, and Sister Mary Scullion, Co-Founder of Project H.O.M.E, will serve as the honored guest speaker.

"The generosity of several corporate sponsors this year will enable us to donate 100% of the silent auction proceeds, as well as a portion of all retail sales to Project H.O.M.E. "The reaction to last year’s event was incredible. Lasting relationships were built between the Project H.O.M.E. women and their partners, truckloads of clothing and other items were donated to Project H.O.M.E.’s thrift store in Philadelphia, several 2006 attendees sought out volunteer opportunities with the organization, and we were all inspired to think about ways to make a difference in the life of someone less fortunate than ourselves. This year’s event is also special because it will be dedicated to Karen Bennett, one of our 2006 Project H.O.M.E. models, who sadly passed away earlier in 2007. Her memory will be honored this year and every year to follow as she truly inspired all who were in her company."

New York’s Fashion Week has nothing on the runway spectacular at this one-of-a-kind hair design show. Models sporting outrageous themed hair designs paraded the catwalk at a local nightclub.

Angela and Carlos put their shears to work for the coveted top spots, including "Most Intricate Design" and "Most Fabulous Head to Toe Look."

All proceeds benefited cancer and HIV/AIDS research, treatment and education at the world-renowned City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute.

On November 5, 2006, the Phoenix Salon & Spa joined salons throughout the East coast to help cut out cancer and HIV/AIDS, participating in largest beauty industry fundraiser in the United States known as HopeCuts. On Halloween, the Phoenix Salon and Spa reached into its bag of treats, and bestowed a thrilling day of makeovers and pumpkin carving. The Phoenix invited moms to enjoy a relaxing makeover, while their "little devils" received spooky Halloween make-up applications. The arrival of the kids from Project H.O.M.E.’s Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs marked the highlight of the day. The children, grades kindergarten through 6, enjoyed complimentary Halloween makeovers and an exciting bag of treats. Steve Clarke, the Guinness Book of World Records holder for Fastest Pumpkin Carver, headlined the event, and delighted the kids with his lightning-quick pumpkin carvings. Each child went home with a pumpkin carved specially for them.

The Big Hang Up

On October 3, 2006, Breast Health Institute held the 4th Annual "Big Hang Up" in LOVE Park. Perhaps the most visual event in October, LOVE Park is annually converted from a park into a center for recognition and remembrance. Hundreds of individuals and company t-shirts are hung on clotheslines to honor breast cancer survivors and the memory of those who have been lost to the disease. While BHI focuses on raising funds to support scientific advances and research in the fight against breast cancer, education and promoting awareness are also a vital part of their mission.

Staff members of the Phoenix Salon & Spa and The Phoenix Condominiums proudly displayed support, donning pink shirts designed especially for the event.

Waxing….it’s not just for women anymore!

On May 21st, the Phoenix Salon & Spa partnered with City of Hope to hold the organizations inaugural Metrosexuality May Event. The Phoenix opened its doors to men seeking serious summer styling, offering a series of salon and spa services from haircuts and coloring to manicures and pedicures, and massages and waxing.

The event is part of the Philadelphia-based HopeCuts campaign, the largest beauty industry fundraiser in the U.S. that supports cancer and HIV/Aids research at City of Hope’s National Medical Center. All services were donated by the Phoenix employees to generate funds for prostate cancer research, awareness, and prevention measures.

On March 7, 2007, the Phoenix, in association with Project H.O.M.E., hosted the inaugural Women Empowering Women: A Night of Fashion and Fusion. All proceeds generated by the unforgettable night of fashion, refreshments, raffle prizes, and guest speakers benefited Project H.O.M.E., a non-profit organization dedicated to ending homelessness through street outreach, supportive housing, and comprehensive services.

The day began with a discussion forum featuring Eagles Coaches wives Tammy Reid and Lindsay Mornhinweg, together with the Director of Public Affairs of The Pew Charitable Trust, Deborah Hayes and three formerly homeless women from Project H.O.M.E who have turned their lives around and re-entered the work force. These six ladies shared their life experiences, hardships and triumphs while lavishing in an afternoon of luxury salon and spa services.

"These formerly homeless women have battled great odds and surfaced with a strength and life view that inspires me every day," said Amanda Aronoff, Director of Communications at Project H.O.M.E. "We all feel so lucky to be involved in an event that not only works towards ending homelessness, but seeks to empower women, and celebrates both their trials and triumphs."

The ladies then joined local celebrity models in a fashion show exhibiting Paula Hian’s 2006 Spring collection and acclaimed Lagos jewelry. Models included Dawn Timmeney, Elizabeth Wellington, April White, Shannon Grant, Connie Nduaguba, Betty Martin, Shelvia Williams and Monica Malpass (donning the infamous "gold dress"). The epitome of today’s successful women, Valerie Ferguson and Linda Swain both charismatic and proven leaders in our community, served as the emcees. Sister Mary Scullion, Director of Project H.O.M.E. and the nights honored speaker, imparted words of hope and wisdom.
