Motherly Love-May 12, 2006
Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love”, can also be coined the “City of Motherly Love.” The first observance of Mother’s Day took place in Philadelphia on May 10, 1907. Nearly a century later, the Phoenix recognized four remarkable mothers, pampering each Philadelphia-style with a Motherly Love Treatment—a Market Street Manicure, Penn Pedicure, Freedom Facial, Liberty Massage and Ben Franklin Blow Dry.
The honored mothers were: Tracey Jean Kepp, a breast cancer survivor and inspiration to her teenage girls; Shelvia Williams, a hard-working single mom; Helen Brown, fondly called “Ms. Helen”, a Community Organizer at Project H.O.M.E. and Director of the North Philly Foot Stompers; and, Eileen Downs, the proud mother of 12 children and 13 grandchildren.
